Living myself now at about 8500ft MSL I can tell you what I have experienced and seen on MANY folks coming up here.
-) Drink plenty of water, and if water doesn't cut it, use Gateorade (I do)
-) Avoid coffee and/or alcohol unless you are already used to the altitude
-) If you feel the SLIGHTEST drowsiness drink a quart of Gatorade (yes really a quart) The dehydation in the mointains doesn't come from sweating but from !breathing! With the dry air here you're loosing water without a single drop of sweat, and IF you are sweatingit's even worse.
-) If you comefrom sea level, there is one rule: Do NOT go directly to Breckenridge, but take it slow. Plan you trip so that you can stay 1 or two days at slightly lower altitudes.
These are the rules they give out to visitors to Grand county (8200-9500ft MSL)
Now a personal note: PLEASE DO NOT do rides through fun twisties until you are used to the altitude. Hypoxia (to enough oxygen in your system) is very hard to spot for the untrained, and is heinous.(You think everything is just dandy, but in reality.... First signs of Hypoxia are discolored finger nails. I know hard to spot underneath the gloves,...)
